Recognising The Women Of The Coffee World

The subject of gender equality is increasingly acknowledged within the coffee industry in all aspects of the trade. As a result of this, we are seeing an increase in organisations supporting gender diverse trade and implementing projects aimed at recognizing and encouraging the participation of women within the international coffee community.

The Café Femenino Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims to support the acknowledgement of women and enhance their status within the coffee community. The foundation works through a network of coffee producer cooperatives based in participating countries, which produce certified Fairtrade and Organic ‘Café Femenino’ coffee. This coffee is sold at a premium price to importers, with the additional funds distributed directly to the women producers as extra income. Roasters who purchase the coffee donate a percentage of the sale of the coffee to the Café Femenino Foundation, who in turn provides grants to projects and programs that enhance the quality of life for all members of the coffee producing community.

This cycle promotes sustainable economic practices and allows the women of the community to take on an active role in the distribution of funds. The foundation works within individual country socio-economic structures to ensure positive and feasible changes can be implemented.

Each year the Café Femenino Foundation release a list of grant requests from participating countries. These requests come directly from women in coffee communities around the world. The Foundation selects projects to be funded based on the overall benefit to the women and their families, in addition to the number of women who will benefit. These projects are adopted and funded by donators from all over the world.

Bennetts have worked with Café Femenino since 2006. We have chosen to support this initiative to show our commitment to gender equality within the industry and encourage the participation of women in the coffee community.
