THE BENNETTS MONTHLY APRIL '25

All things Bennetts and Coffee...

Welcome to the April edition of the Bennetts Monthly Newsletter! In this issue, we provide our latest coffee market report, offering insights into global pricing movements. We’re also excited to highlight a few special Indian microlots that are still available in limited quantities—these unique coffees showcase the diversity of Indian coffee, and we encourage you to secure them while stock lasts.

As we look ahead, the team is preparing for the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Expo later this month. This event is always a highlight on the coffee calendar, where we’ll be connecting with our industry partners, exploring the latest trends, and discovering new innovations that shape the future of specialty coffee.

Please also take note of our upcoming office closures for Easter and ANZAC Day, so you can plan for the month ahead.

Enjoy the read!

MARKET REPORT

If any of these terms in the market report are confusing, we urge you to use Investopedia to make sense of them. We have found it to be a brilliant tool when learning about all things trading, futures and currency https://www.investopedia.com/  - Scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Dictionary"

Last month was in a lot of respects a continuation of February’s uncertainty when it came to the market’s potential direction in the coming months. While it’s true it has (finally!) been raining across the Brazilian coffee-growing areas, it’s also true the rains were a bit late in starting and have thus far been a bit patchy across the regions… The consensus so far has been that while the rains have quenched the market somewhat, ideally there needs to be a good level of precipitation throughout April to replenish the soil profile in anticipation of the dry period that precedes the next flowering in September & October later this year.

The price action in the coffee market last month was therefore broadly reflective of the above will-it/won’t it rain environment. Volatility was still its main feature as 10-15 US c/lb intra-day were par for the course… However, we could see a broad price range between 370 and 405 US c/lb was established, above and below which it proved hard to break through. A few days bouncing off the bottom of the range are usually followed by a big bounce to the upside, which then gradually subsides, and so on…

ICE certified stocks are still below 1 million bags at destination, which in case people aren’t aware, is not much at all in historic terms. This means that any minimal supply shock, be it at origin or in the form of logistics issues are enough to send the specs into a feeding frenzy. We’re already seeing some effects of late as the trade is still extremely short, as roasters across the globe continue focussing on covering nearby needs in the hope that copious rains in Brazil will finally break the deadlock…

But what if the rains aren’t enough? Best case scenario is we continue to see the market drift within the current range during the next couple of months… And worst case… well, we’ve been there already.  Regardless, we’ll soon find ourselves in May, and shortly thereafter in June when no doubt we’ll get the usual barrage of frost-related scaremongering which could put a rocket under a market that doesn’t need much to boldly go where no market has gone before. We can only hope the rocket is one of those made by SpaceX.

There are certainly opportunities for roasters to secure pricing at the bottom of the range in this volatile environment, so it’s always a wise move to set targets that will help cover off some short- and medium-term needs at the very least.

MICROLOT HIGHLIGHT - INDIA

We’re excited to shine a spotlight on a series of exceptional microlots from the Kelagur Heights Estate, in the lush Western Ghats of India. Known for producing standout coffees that exemplify both the rich heritage of Indian coffee cultivation and modern, innovative processing techniques, these microlots bring distinct and diverse flavour profiles to the table. However, with limited quantities remaining, now is the perfect time to secure these remarkable coffees for your lineup!

Whether you're looking for complex acidity, rich body, or unique processing methods, these microlots offer something truly special. Let’s explore the selection:

India Kelagur Heights SLN6, SLN9, S-795 P/Sundried Honey
This sun-dried honey process microlot showcases a zesty orange and lime acidity, perfectly balanced by a juicy mouthfeel and a lingering sweet caramel finish. Its vibrant citrus character adds brightness to the cup, making it ideal for those who enjoy coffees with a crisp, refreshing acidity and a touch of sweetness.

India Kelagur Heights SLN9 - Natural
A rich, inky body defines this naturally processed SLN9 lot, with layered notes of sweet almonds and a bright orange and berry acidity. The cup rounds out beautifully with a hazelnut and toffee finish, making it an excellent choice for those who appreciate complexity and depth in their coffee.

India Kelagur Heights Speciale Bulk Robusta P/Sundried
For those looking for a bold and earthy cup, this Robusta microlot is a true standout. It offers earthy leather and roasted peanut notes, complemented by a smooth body and the indulgent richness of dark chocolate. Subtle hints of soft whiskey weave throughout, creating a robust, satisfying cup.

Each of these microlots tells its own story of Indian coffee tradition and processing innovation, from the unique flavour complexities of the honey process to the boldness of Robusta.
