All Things Bennetts and Coffee...

Welcome to our monthly newsletter!

July is shaping up to be one of our busiest months yet, packed with events, causes, and coffee worth celebrating. First things first, we’ve got the latest market report to keep you across the last month’s numbers. Moving into July, we're marking Global Tiger Day alongside our partners at WildCats Conservation Alliance, sharing exciting updates from Grounds for Health as they head into their 30th anniversary, and recapping our first-ever Beans & Banter event, with another one already on the calendar. Plus, we are hosting a special Gems of Yunnan cupping with Slurps Up Melbourne, so keep an eye out on our social media!

Enjoy the read, and we hope to catch you soon.

MARKET REPORT

If any of these terms in the market report are confusing, we urge you to use Investopedia to make sense of them. We have found it to be a brilliant tool when learning about all things trading, futures and currency.

The month of June proved to be an eventful one for coffee markets.

Arabica opened the month at 259.20usc/lb and continued to slide through the first week and a bit to its monthly low of 238.85usc/lb. Notably, this level closely matched the support area seen in November 2024, before the market rallied to more than 400usc/lb over the following three months. While history can sometimes repeat itself, the market environment today looks quite different. Expectations of a large Brazilian crop remain a significant influence on prices and make a repeat of the rally from 20 months ago less likely.

Following the low on June 9th, however, Arabica staged an impressive recovery. Prices rallied more than 60usc/lb over the remainder of the month, closing just above the 300usc/lb level.

The rebound appears to reflect ongoing tightness in the availability of physical coffee, particularly washed Arabicas. Limited short-term supply has continued to support nearby pricing and has also helped lift the Robusta market.

Robusta followed a similar path during June. Opening at 3,347USD/MT, prices fell to a monthly low of 3,216USD/MT before recovering steadily throughout the month. The market finished June at a high of 3,744USD/MT, achieved on the final trading day.

Interestingly, despite all of the movements across the coffee markets in June, there was relatively little NEW fundamental information entering the market.

The common discussion points supporting prices centred around the unusual amounts of rain in Brazil which slowed down harvesting activities (approx. 40% complete), slower harvest in Peru, lower than expected volumes in Colombia, tight inventories at destinations, and the potential that El Niño will have drought-like impacts on coffee growing later this year and into 2027.

Balancing these concerns and the main weight on the market continues to be the impending 2026/2027 Brazil crop where volume expectations remain above 70 million bags, which would still see global surplus for this crop year. Most of the Brazilian crop hasn’t been commercialised with producers opting to hold for better prices before selling. The recent rally may provide an incentive for additional producer selling, something the market will be watching closely in the coming weeks.

The Australian Dollar softened against the US Dollar during June. This followed signals from the Reserve Bank of Australia that further interest rate increases are becoming less likely over the coming months. At the same time, the US Federal Reserve pushed back against expectations of near-term interest rate cuts, citing ongoing uncertainty around economic conditions. Together, these developments have provided support for the US Dollar against the Aussie.

As we move into July, Brazil remains the market's primary focus. Harvest progress, weather conditions and producer selling behaviour will all play critical roles in determining price direction. Provided frost risk remains limited and rainfall eases, the key question for the market becomes whether Brazilian producers choose to take advantage of recent price strength and sell coffee now, or continue holding stocks in anticipation of higher prices later in the year.

GLOBAL TIGER DAY 2026

This July 29th, we celebrate Global Tiger Day, a day to raise awareness about the drastic decline in wild tiger populations, champion conservation efforts, fight against poaching and habitat loss, and honour the big cats' vital role as apex predators.

Bennetts are proud to partner with WildCats Conservation Alliance, an organisation driving impactful, science-based conservation efforts to help keep wild tigers free to roam in a changing world.

For each bag of our India Tiger Mountain coffee sold, Bennetts donate USD$1 towards the conservation and research of endangered tigers in Kanha National Park in the Mandla and Balaghat regions of India. This year, the funds supported projects in monitoring and restoring habitat, law enforcement, and conflict mitigation.

Concrete action included improving grasslands for herbivores and support better hunting habitat for tigers, hosting 15 volunteer community liaison groups focused on Human Tiger Conflict avoidance strategies and strengthening the community’s capacity to coexist with wildlife.

India Tiger Mountain™ A Grade

This coffee is exclusive to Bennetts, specially selected by Scott Bennett for its varietal and altitude classifications. Grown under a two-tier shade canopy in the Bababudan Giris mountains of India's Western Ghats, it comprises SL795, SL9, and Cauvery varietals. The shade-grown method involving nearly 50 tree species, protects against soil erosion and temperature fluctuations while supporting diverse wildlife. The lot typically has notes of citrus fruits and fresh butter!

Ask your Bennetts Account Manager about our next available shipment of this coffee to support this great cause.

GROUNDS FOR HEALTH

Grounds for Health (GfH) is entering their 30th anniversary this year. As their long-term donation sponsor, we’re pleased to share some positive updates on their newest Impact Report 2024-25.

In Ethiopia, by the end of 2025, GfH was the only organisation in the country implementing HPV self-testing. Meanwhile, in Nyeri County, Kenya, they were one of only two organisations that still actively invest in cervical cancer screening and treatment access. This highlights their critical role in narrowing gaps in the health system, building coordination, and sustaining access to essential services for women in rural communities.

This past year, GfH were able to offer HPV self-testing to over 8,000 women across Kenya and Ethiopia, a more than fourfold increase over the year before. They ensured that 89% of women who tested positive received follow-up treatment. Across the coffee community, women stepped up to deliver speeches on HPV testing, spreading awareness far beyond the farm gate.

Bennetts has partnered with GfH for 16 years. In August last year, we joined forces with John Burton Limited to launch an Australian and New Zealand coffee auction in support of the foundation. The auction brought together the coffee community and raised USD$2,500.

As Grounds for Health marks 30 years of impact, Bennetts is proud to stand alongside them in helping build a healthier future for coffee growing communities.

BEANS & BANTER RECAP – PLUS NEXT MONTH’S EVENT

We hosted our very first Beans & Banter event a couple of weeks ago, off the back of Julian and Aislinn’s trip to Papua New Guinea. And what a kick-off it was!

Aislinn delivered a fantastic presentation on the PNG coffee agricultural scene, breaking down the different grades and walking us through how the supply chain operates on the ground. After such a lively talk, guests were invited to cup every grade from A to Y, evaluating the coffee both on green appearance and cupping profiles. The energy in the room was positive, filled with interesting questions and buzzing conversations. We had a blast having everyone there.

If you missed out, don’t worry! Our next Beans & Banter event will be held on Thursday 23rd July at 3:30pm at our HQ in Kew. This month, we’ll be exploring the amazing array of Costa Rican microlots from producers Ivan Solis, CoopeTarrazu, Las Lajas and ASOPROAAA. These producer partners have spent decades applying themselves to specialty coffee cultivation, and their dedication to producing premium lots is unwavering. With processes ranging from Honey to Natural and Anaerobic across a multitude of varieties, this is a tasting not to be missed.

All the coffees showcasing at this event are pre-shipment inbound lots, available for pre-order on the day. We encourage you to come along and secure your volume before the shipment arrives in September. Pura Vida!

Please reserve your spot via Eventbrite.
